About the Member

The Modern Awareness Society (MAS), Warangal is a community-based organisation working for the Transgender and Gay communities, Hijra community and Shivasakthi community. It was registered in 2004 in Warangal, with the registration no: 1500/2004 under Societies Registration Act. The aim of the MAS CBO is to bring all the underprivileged, neglected, humiliated and scattered community members together on one platform and build their confidence levels and give them hope and safety to lead healthy lives. 

 

The CBO has the Governing Body consists of nine members. The President leads the Governing Body and Executive Body in implementing the need-based activities. MAS CBO conducts Annual General Body meeting once in a year, where they discuss all activities conducted during the year, key achievements, income and expenditure details during the year, challenges experienced and overcome during the year and next year’s plan. 

 

In 2011, MAS got 12A and 80G certificates. There was a gradual increase in the membership of community members to the CBO. MAS has been implementing different sustainable developmental programmes for the benefit of the marginal populations over the last two decades. Different national and state level funding organisations, individual donors and members of the organisation have been generously extending financial support to implement the projects and programmes.

Key Activities

MAS implemented the APF Project, supported by Solidarity Foundation (partner NGO), Banglore. The goal of this project is to enhance overall capacities of the CBO to be sustainable and be able to manage all activities themselves. Through the project, MAS divided themselves into four main activities, namely, Organisational Strengthening, Crisis management, Social Entitlements and Networking and Alliance

HIV Prevention

The Pehchaan Project which was implemented till 2015 was supported by India HIV/AIDS Alliance. The main focus of the project was HIV prevention mainly for trans-community and their partners. MAS also implemented the Vihan Project with the support from India HIV/AIDS where they provided exclusive services to the PLHIV among the transgender community.

Crisis response

In the last year, MAS has identified and addressed 24 crisis incidents. After getting complete details about the crisis, the process of addressing the crisis is continuously being evolved by the CBO and other stakeholders. MAS ensures complete support to the community members when they are in troubles.

Sensitisation programmes

MAS conducted sensitisation programmes with community leaders, 3 were with District Collector and Magistrate, the Municipal Corporation, NGOs, with political leaders, the police, the Medical Department, Media, government departments, District Legal Services Authority, with Child Line department, and with women’s organisations.

Training programmes

Under the APF project, Solidarity Foundation (partner NGO) provided training on leadership building, legal literacy, preparatory training and social entitlements. The trainings are very useful to implement project activities confidently and successfully for the benefit of the community members.

Organisational strengthening

As part of organisational strengthening, Solidarity Foundation extended support and guidance to MAS to modify and update their bylaws. They renewed the CBO’s registration and 12A and 80G certificates. With regard to documentation, updated the registers and records. Completed Annual reports for the last four years from 2019 to 2023.
