Jogappa Platform, Gadag

About the Member

Jogappas are a socio-cultural community where they focus on devotion to a Goddess (Yellamma) and are skilled in dancing and singing with traditional instruments. This culture is found in North Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra. Gadag Jogappa Platform was started in the year 2010 and registered in the same year. It works in five taluks in Gadag and has nine board members and 17 staff members, among which, 15 people are from the community and two are non-community members. There are eight members in the Crisis Response Team (CRT), three advocacy members, four members in the purchasing committee (admin) and five members in the Social Entitlement committee. The CBO works with Gender and Sexual Minorities specifically the Jogappas.

Key Activities

The CBO’s key activities include advocacy, crisis management, and networking among others. Advocacy and networking is a continuous attempt at building networks for advocacy, reducing violence and improving the standards of living of the Jogappas and trans community members. The Jogappas conduct meetings, focus group discussions, health camps, social entitlements camps, and attend crisis among others activities. This helps in building the capacity of the Jogappas as well.

Networking

They have networks with GOs, and NGOs at the district level. They also have networks with the Women and Child Development Department, Health Department, and Revenue Department to better avail benefits and accesses from these departments. They work with NGOs like Solidarity Foundation, Best Practices Foundation, Sarathya, and, Karnataka Sexual Minorities Forum (KSMF)

Livelihoods

They have also started three small businesses including small shops, goat farming, etc. in their villages through financial support from the Women and Child Development Department.

Social entitlements

Getting social entitlements for their community members is also a major part of their work. They have also formed a platform to access social entitlements with their health and social entitlements needs in mind. The details of what they have got so far are given below.
