Maromi is the eldest daughter of Rajobala Roy, who resides in Kishmotdah village in Dhubri district. She has a younger sister. Maromi’s father passed away when she was very young. Her mother is a midday meal cook at the village school. Her mother worked as a midday meal cook at the village school, to make ends meet. With her meagre earnings, she ensured that her two daughters completed their education.
In the year 2020, when Maromi had only three months till her 10th grade board exams, Janardan, a young man from the same village, forcibly eloped with Moromi and married her. This devastated Maromi’s mother. She requested that the Nabamallika Sangha of that village took action to find her daughter and engage in some discussions so that her daughter could to sit for the board exam.
To find both Maromi and Janardan, the Sangha members sought the help of the police. When they found her, in front of the police, they came to an agreement with Janardan and his family, to let Maromi finish her upcoming board exams and then legally get married. After successfully passing her board exams Maromi and Janardan got married. Initially they lived a happy life, but then Janardan began torturing Maromi. It gradually became a daily occurrence and Janardan did not allow even Maromi to attend sangha meeting. One day she managed to escape and attend a meeting, where she shared her problems with all the members and requested their support.
After listening to Maromi, the sangha members met Janardan several times to counsel him and he was also invited to a few awareness programmes on violence against women, organised by Dharmajyoti Block Mahasangha. Gradually, his behavior began to change for the better and he stopped torturing Maromi. Maromi also started attending sangha meetings regularly and got opportunities to participate in different training programmes organised by Dharmajyoti Block Mahasangha.
